More than 20 rescued from Gulf waters on Thursday

According to reports from local news outlets, at least 20 people were rescued from the Gulf on Thursday afternoon as dangerous rip currents created life-threatening conditions near Fort Morgan.

Red flags were flying on Thursday across Alabama beaches, warning of the high risk of strong rip currents. Despite the warnings, numerous water rescues occurred, with several people taken to the hospital and two airlifted in critical condition.

Officials say dangerous surf conditions can linger after tropical weather impacts the Gulf Coast, and every water rescue puts both swimmers and emergency crews at risk.

Beachgoers are urged to follow beach flag warnings, stay out of the water during red flag conditions, and check local beach safety updates before entering the Gulf.
