Tropical Storm Bertha continues to wobble just south of the Mississippi coast late Wednesday morning, bringing gusty winds, periods of rain, and rough surf to Coastal Alabama.
As of 10:00 a.m. CDT, TS Bertha was located about 40 miles south of Pascagoula with winds of 50 mph. The storm is moving west-northwest at 6 mph and continues to move away from Alabama as it tracks toward Louisiana and eventually Texas.
Even though the center will remain west of our area, impacts will continue along Alabama’s beaches through tonight.
Gusty winds will continue today, with rainfall totals generally between 1 and 2 inches across Coastal Alabama. While widespread flooding is not expected, localized ponding of water and brief flooding in poor drainage areas will be possible.
The biggest concern along the coast will be minor coastal flooding around times of high tide. Water levels of 1 to 3 feet above normally dry ground remain possible in low-lying and vulnerable coastal locations.
Beach conditions will remain hazardous as rough surf and dangerous rip currents continue through the end of the week. Make sure to observe the flag system, and when double red flags are flying the Gulf is closed to swimmers.
